Davis High cross country Sac-Joaquin subsection meet November 5, 2005 Angels Camp CA Mission Accomplished. That would describe the outcome for Davis High cross country teams at the Sac-Joaquin subsection championships, held Saturday at Angels Camp. Six DHS teams and three individuals qualified for next week's Sac-Joaquin Section championships. The varsity boys and girls look to defend their titles from 2004 and Saturday's results indicate they have a good opportunity to do so. Both varsity teams ran at less than full throttle with the objective of qualifying for the section meet without expending too much effort. The DHS varsity girls came up with a victory over top ranked Fairfield and an up-and-coming squad from Modesto. The girls will face stiff competition from both teams in the championship meet next week. Without a doubt, all three teams were playing a bit of cat and mouse and were unwilling to show their strengths at the subsection meet. Chelsea Reilly was the top Davis runner, finishing in eighth place. Sheldon High will offer the biggest challenge for the varsity boys at the section meet. Sheldon ran very strong on Saturday to take the team title, scoring only 51 points. Davis finished in second place with 101 points. Brendan Gregg led the way for DHS, with a fourth place finish. Other DHS teams qualifying for the section championships were the freshman boys (1st place team), frosh/soph girls (1st place team), junior varsity girls (1st place team), and the junior varsity boys (4th place team). Individually, Matt Petersen was first in the freshman boys race, Grace Pettygrove finished second overall for junior varsity girls, Emily Dimond took third for the frosh/soph girls, and Ethan Champion-Fritz was 18th for junior varsity boys. Tyler Wilken (20th place) qualified as an individual for sophomore boys. Kim and Amy Elson (24th and 30th) qualified as individuals for the junior varsity girls. The Sac-Joaquin Section cross country championships will be at Folsom High School on Friday, November 11th.
