Sac-Joaquin Section Track Championships
May 28, 2004
Hughes Stadium - Sac City College
The Davis High track team wrapped up their 2004 season Friday night at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships.
Thad Sieracki had the best finish of the evening for the Blue Devils, taking 5th place in a strategically run 3200 meters. Sieracki, who finished 8th at last week's subsection qualifier, hovered in 6th place with the lead pack for 6 laps. The pack began to break up on the lap 7 as Vacaville's Cheyne Inman and Jesuit's John Whithol battled for the lead with a series of surges, but Sieracki followed with a small surge of his own, eventually passing Saint Mary's Scott Balcao to capture the 5th spot. His time of 9:39.83 was his second best lifetime, and over 10 seconds faster than his effort last week in subsection meet.
Ricky Martin, suffering from a calf strain sustained in Thursdays 800 meter trials, was battling for third place at 500 meters in the 800 meter finals, but faded to 8th on the home stretch. Martin's time was 2:00.94. Martin, a senior, will be attending Willamette University in the fall and will compete in both cross country and track.
Kaitlin Gregg, who grabbed the final qualifying spots last week in both the 1600 and 3200 meters, had a fine evening. Gregg was 8th in the 1600 meters, finishing with a lifetime best of 5:19.05 in the 30 runner field. Ninety minutes later Gregg came back with a 12th place showing in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:45.67, a sixteen second improvement from the subsection meet.
Chelsea Reilly, the Monticello Empire League champion for 1600 meters and 4th in the 1600 meters in the subsection qualifier, faded a bit in the 1600 meter final, finishing in 26th place with a time of 5:40.57. Reilly also doubled back in the 3200 meters, taking 19th place with a time of 12:08.96, her fourth best effort lifetime. Reilly's 1600 meter race in the MEL championships (time of 5:14.15) and the subsection meet (time of 5:14.99) were breakthrough efforts as she lowered her time 17 seconds from her previous bests at Stanford and Chico.
