DHS reserves finals spots

Davis High school track coach Spencer Elliot stood in the stands with his team, all of them listening as hard as they had just run. It was moments after the boys 4-by-400 relay team had run the fastest race of their lives, and the quartet waited with teammates to see if they would race again this season.
The stage was Wednesday's Division I Sac-Joaquin Section championship trials held on the Woody Wilson track at UC Davis. The Blue Devils were looking to make the top 10, which would qualify them for next week's all-division section championships.
The four boys who had taken fourth place in their heat, after running a personal best of 3:30.00, were, as Elliot said, on the bubble.
A cheer of joy could be heard from the group as it was announced that the boys had taken ninth place, which was good enough to move on to the finals.
"It was interesting because both the girls 4-by-400 and the boys got times that put them right in the middle of it," Elliot said. "Both teams were right in the bubble and just as the girls had unfortunately been edged out, the boys were able to just slip in."
That relay team - consisting of Tony Valiente, Abas Jemal, Frank Tempest and Josh Van Eyken - will not have a chance to win a Division I title Friday because they were not in the top eight Wednesday. But they did survive and advance, which was the goal heading into the day.
"Our goal was to have as many people move on as possible," Elliot said. "I told the guys that if they ran a great race they would have a chance and both they and the girls just went all out, which is all you can ask for."
Jemal, who ran the second leg of the relay, will be coming back on Friday for the finals of the 300-meter hurdles. Running a 40.26, the Blue Devil won his event and is one of DHS' brightest chances for an individual section title.
For the girls, Kara DiBiasio, who anchored the girls 4-by-400 relay that just missed qualifying, will keep running after posting a personal best time in the 400 meters. She was second in her heat and eighth overall, pushing her into the Division I finals.
"Kara's race was really impressive," Elliot said. "I expected her to finish where she did but based on her times coming in, I think she surprised the other runners."
Joining her teammate at next week's all-division meet will be Kiran Sheffrin, who qualified 10th in the 100 hurdles. It was another personal best for the Blue Devils as she ran by far the best race she has all year.
"It was just wonderful," Elliot said. "There wasn't one situation where they didn't perform as well as they possibly could and as a coach that is what you want. The 4-by-400 (boys) was a great way to finish because they qualified as a team."
