Introduction
This city of Davis running map was created on August 18th, 2007 as a part of Kenny Durell's Eagle Scout project. The goal of this site is to provide detailed information about some of the many running routes in Davis. My hope is that this map will be the catalyst for a comprehensive map that will include myriad runner's favorite routes, extending to all regions of Davis. This was a two-part project that brought in volunteers from many different groups -- DHS cross country, Boy Scouts, friends -- who all contributed in a variety of ways, from running the routes with GPS devices to putting down markers using blowtorches to creating this website in HTML and JavaScript.
How this site was created
This site was created in two parts over consecutive Saturdays. First, runners ran the routes with GPS devices and physical markers were placed on the North Davis greenbelts. The next week, a trio of scouts and a technology specialist from the Sacramento Bee, using the data collected by the previous week's volunteers, collaborated to create the website you now see before you. Make sure to check out the extra bits of the site, such as locations of water fountains along the routes and extra information about each run.
Well-Deserved Thank Yous
Big thanks to all my family (Amy, Bob, and Forrest) for their tremendous help with logistics leading up to the project as well as aid and support throughout.
Many thanks to:
- Dan Nguyen -- Multimedia Reporter at the Sacramento Bee -- For volunteering so much more of his time (for free) than he would ever admit; for reassuring and convincing me that my wildest dreams about what this project could be were possible, and for teaching all of the volunteers on August 18th a whole lot about HTML code and what makes a good website.
- Don Lemmon -- Assistant Director, Public Works Department -- For donating all of the marking materials and for being so enthusiastic and helpful from the get-go.
- Sandy Dietrich -- Parks Supervisor, Parks and Recreation Department -- For putting me in contact with the right people every step of the way and for being so amenable even as my project began to grow in complexity.
- Dan Dibiasio -- Scout Master of Troop 66 -- For suggesting I do a project that would be closer to my heart.
- Bill Gregg -- DHS Cross Country Coach -- For sponsoring the project, for agreeing to put the map up on the Davis High cross country website and for being so receptive to changes as they arose.
- Linda Paumer -- Yolo Boy Scout District Advancement Chair -- For approving my somewhat non-traditional Eagle project.
- J.D. Denton -- Owner, Fleet Feet Sports -- For agreeing to link to my maps and for putting me in contact with GPS watch owners.
- Nugget Market -- For their generous food donation.
- Dawn Daro -- Coldwell Banker -- For her flyer box (for the physical maps) donation.
- Craighton Chin, Russell Darling -- For trusting me enough to let me borrow their valuable GPS watches.
- All of the amazing volunteers -- Everyone who helped out really gave a lot of effort and it showed in the product; the project couldn't have been finished without all of you!
The awesome volunteers!!
