On Friday, May 14, the Davis High School mens and womens track and field team traveled to Vallejo High School for the MEL League Championship Finals. The women finished fourth overall with 72 total team points. Strong performances and courageous leadership from veterans Kara DiBiasio, Heather West, Veronica Miqueo, and Kaitlin Gregg helped spur the team to several season best marks and sub-section qualifiers. Kaitlin Gregg, Veronica Miqueo, and Heather West all ran well and advanced to the subsection meet. Gregg was 2nd in the 3200 meters and 4th in the 1600 meters. Miqueo finished 3rd in the 800 meters and was followed by West in 4th. The teams future looks bright for the Blue Devils, as freshman, Chelsea Reilly took first in the 1600m run with a remarkable time of 5:14.15 and third in the 3200m run. Her freshman teammate, Lauren Guerrieri placed second in the discus throw, third in the shot put, and fifth in the high jump. Traci Alger surprised the competition placing third in the long jump with a seasons best jump of 14-10.25. The men finished fifth overall with 51 total team points. Like the women, the men enjoyed quality performances from underclassmen, Including a 400m victory by sophomore, Josh Van Eyken, and a fourth place finish in the 300m hurdles by sophomore, Abas Jemal. Ricky Martin had a great day taking second in the 800m run and third in the 1600m run. Martin, along with Van Eyken, Jemal, and sophomore, Tony Valiente, secured a spot in sub-sections in the 4x400m relay. Thad Sieracki was 3rd in the 3200 meters and Steve Buchanan finished 4th in the 800 meters, both advancing to the sub-section meet. Sub Sections will take place at U.C. Davis. Trials will be on Wednesday, May 19, and finals will be on Friday, May 21.
