Monticello Empire League Junior Varsity Track and Field Championships
The Davis High School Track and Field team traveled to Vallejo High School for the MEL J.V. Championships. Both the boys and the girls enjoyed a festive bus ride home as MEL champs.
The girls set the tone for the entire meet with a victory in the 4x100m Relay. The girls dominated the competition throughout the meet. Sophomore, Ebony Smith earned first place victories in four events: The 4x100m Relay, the 100m dash, the 200m dash, and the 4x400m Relay. Smith finished her day with a gutsy, come-from-behind anchor leg in the 4x400m relay. Freshman, Cheyenne Feliz PRd en route to a 400m dash victory. Sophomore, Kiran Sheffrin, recovering from a stress fracture, had not competed in weeks. In her first race back, Sheffrin became the MEL champ in the 300m hurdles with a PR of 53.60. Sophomore, Amy Elson doubled in the horizontal jumps and earned victories in both the long and triple jumps. Sophomore, Claire Hardesty won the Discuss with a throw of 80' 02".
Like their female teammates, the boys began their day with a victory in the 4x100m relay. However, the boys did not enjoy the same margin of victory the girls did. Freshman, Alex McKee-Ota became a four time MEL Champion, winning the 400m, 200m, 4x100m Relay, and the 4x400m Relay. McKee-Ota PRd in the 400 with a time of 56.98, then anchored his 4x400m relay team to a crucial victory. Brian Champagne won the High Jump with a jump of 5-04.
Practically every Davis athlete in the distance races recorded a best time at the MEL JV track championships. Patrick Lynch scored in three races, finishing 1st in the 800 meters, 2nd in the 1600 meters and 4th in the 3200 meters. Brendan Gregg was 2nd in the 3200 meters and 3rd in the 1600 meters. Rebecca Woo, Kaitlyn Beesley-Campos, and Sarah Chan led the way for girls. Woo took 2nd in the 3200 meters and 3rd in the 1600 meters. Beesley-Campos finished 1st in the 800 meters, while Chan was 3rd for 800 meters and 4th at 1600 meters.
Both the boys and girls teams put forth a variety of tremendous efforts on their way to becoming MEL Champions. A season of hard work and dedication culminated in a well-earned team victory.
