Davis High Cross Country Wins Four MEL Titles!
The Davis High girls cross country team came into the Monticello Empire League championships tied for first with the Vacaville Bulldogs in the season standings. The teams exchanged wins during the season and knew that Wednesday's showdown in Vacaville at Lagoon Valley Park would determine the championship. Both teams raced hard last Saturday in southern California at the Mt. SAC Invitational and results suggested that Vacaville might have the upper hand. It proved not to be the case as the DHS girls incredible depth and determination on Vacaville's home course led to a decisive 22-45 win. Chelsea Reilly and Vacaville's Cecily Lemmon battled for the lead for over 2 miles before Reilly eventually pulled away for the win. DHS runners Maddie Hall, Jonah Weeks, and Jenna Fritz went toe to toe with Vacaville's Analiza Rizzo and Lindsay Dubbs for the next three spots. All three Davis runners were able to hold off their opponents and took the 3-4-5 positions. Merek Kesser rounded out the scoring for DHS with a ninth place finish. According to Vacaville coach, Ray Hausler, the lady Blue Devils' team time of 95:54 was the fastest for girls ever run in the long history of the Lagoon Valley course. Reilly, Hall, Weeks, and Fritz received all league honors by virtue of their top eight finishes.
The DHS boys showed they are ready for the championship season as they dominated the league race, taking seven of the top eight spots, and scoring a perfect 15 points for the meet. Brendan Gregg led the way with the individual win. Gregg earned all league honors along with Patrick Lynch (2nd), Scott Halliday (3rd), Zach Bonner (4th), Kyle Buchoff (5th), Mitch Danforth (6th), and Kenny Durell (8th).
The DHS frosh/soph teams also captured leagues titles and individual victories. Emily Dimond and Drew Petersen took first place in their races. The frosh/soph boys won with a score of 26 points, well ahead of second place Napa's 41 points. The frosh/soph girls won handily with a near perfect score on 16 points.
The Blue Devils continue next in the championship season with the Sac-Joaquin Section subsection championships at Angels Camp on Saturday, November 5.
