The Davis High varsity cross country teams competed Saturday in the Clovis Invitational at Fresno's Woodward Park. The meet was held on the CIF State championship course and offered teams the opportunity to rehearse racing for state championship competition. The boys varsity placed seventh in large school section despite the absence of number one runner, Thad Sieracki. The boys' strong showing came about because of incredible pack running. Davis' top six finished within 16 seconds of each other. Seniors Ricky Martin, Dustin Schelegle, Steve Buchanan, and Jeremy Del Cid all ran personal bests on the 5000 meter course, and were accompanied by fine efforts from freshman Brendan Gregg and sophomore Scott Halliday. The girls varsity opted to move up and compete in the tough team championship section. Juniors Kaitlin Gregg and Paige Stewart both ran personal bests, while Chelsea Reilly, Nadine Ibrahim, Lauren Seabury, Grace Pettygrove, and Sarah Chan all finished with times much faster than expectations. The girls finished a respectable 16th in team scoring as they went against many of the top teams in the state. The Blue Devils race again next Wednesday at Community Park in a Monticello Empire League dual meet against Vintage High.
