DHS Cross Country finishes season at CIF State Championships
Girls The Davis High girl's cross country team finished in 14th place at the California High School State Championships in a deep and very balanced field. The California state meet is considered among the best high school meets in the United States. Only 17 points separated 11th through 18th places in team scoring, with a constant stream of runners crossing the finish line at a rate of over one per second. There were 23 teams and 201 finishers. Knowing the state meet field would be deep, fast, and crowded, the strategy was to go out hard and be in a strong scoring position at the mile mark. The girls pounded out the first mile and were rewarded for their efforts.
Kaitlin Gregg had the best finish of the day for Blue Devil runners, finishing in 35th place with a time of 19:08. Veronica Miqueo was close behind in 52nd place at 19:20. Chelsea Reilly, Nadine Ibrahim, and Grace Pettygrove rounded out the scoring in 98th, 135th, and 144th places respectively. Paige Stewart and Lauren Seabury were 154th and 156th. Boys The Davis High boys' cross country team finished in 21st place at the California State Championships in what is considered the strongest high school state championship meet in the country. Running according to plan, DHS runners took out the first mile faster than in any race this season and still found themselves in the second third of the 203 runner field.
Ricky Martin led the Blue Devils in a personal best time of 16:46, finishing in 91st place. The next four Blue Devils, Patrick Lynch, Scott Halliday, Jeremy Del Cid, and Brendan Gregg finished within 8 seconds of each other, all with personal best times as well. They were 137th, 144th, 147th, and 151st places respectively. Dustin Schelegle and Steve Buchanan rounded out the Davis squad in 161st and 175th places.
