Boys finish 11th and girls 13th in the mud and rain at the California State Cross Country Championships
Storm clouds gathered Saturday morning over Fresno's Woodward Park, site of the California State High School Cross Country championships. The balmy conditions during Friday's course preview gave no hint of the hard rain and sloppy conditions to come. Fortunately, the Blue Devils had trained in bad weather prior to the Sac-Joaquin Section championships and took to the mud like ducks to water.
The boys raced first and put together one of their finest efforts of the season. Despite the course being slower in the wet conditions, four of the top five DHS runners had personal best times on the 5000 meter course. They were rewarded for their efforts with an 11th place finish out of 23 teams. Sophomore Brendan Gregg led the way, taking 31st with a time 16 minutes, 14 seconds. He was followed by Thad Sieracki (65th, 16:33), Patrick Lynch (77th, 16:43), Mitch Danforth (102nd, 16:56), Scott Halliday (107th, 16:58), Brian Champagne (181st, 17:55), and Kyle Buchoff (193rd, 18:44). The 11th place boys were only 7 points out of the top ten and it was a marked improvement from their 21st place finish of a year ago. The future looks bright as everyone but Sieracki will return for the 2005 season.
Results were mixed for the DHS girls as they finished in 13th place in the 23 team field, up one notch from their 14th place finish in 2003. Their two top runners Chelsea Reilly and Kaitlin Gregg were not quite at their best as Reilly was battling a flu bug and Gregg continued to be hampered by a season long leg injury. Still, Reilly was able to lead the way for the lady Blue Devils with a 62nd place finish in 19 minutes, 39 seconds. Gregg (119th, 20:13) was the 4th finisher for DHS. Teammates Jonah Weeks (72nd, 19:43), Grace Pettygrove (109th, 20:05), and Allison Manderfield (146th, 20:38) stepped in with great efforts as each recorded personal best times at Woodward Park. Alicia Reinhart (154th, 20:54) and Elizabeth Bertolani (158th, 21:00) had season best times to round out the scoring for Davis. Reilly, Weeks, Pettygrove, and Manderfield will return in 2005 and there is a talented group of frosh/soph runners waiting in the wings to fill out the roster next fall.
