Reporter Bob Dickson goes to practice with Canyon Country XC teams
Below is an excerpt from Bob Dickson's article about practicing with the Canyon Country XC team...
In the days since I ran, I’ve asked myself what I was trying to learn. Sure, I discovered how hard the Cowboys train, but I knew that already. No team enjoys their kind of success by taking it easy.
I think what I really wanted to know — or at least what I’m most pleased to have discovered — is why they run.
Cross country is truly a brutal sport. Everybody, from the fastest to the slowest, pushes themselves to exhaustion. And for what? Headlines are rare indeed in the world of high school cross country, and college scholarships are not easy to come by.
And believe me, if getting in shape is what motivates a cross country runner, I can think of a dozen less painful ways of accomplishing that goal.
No, I suspect cross country runners run for another reason — and it’s that very reason that’s kept me thinking fondly about my horribly painful and embarrassing experience with the Cowboys last week.
While I was on that hill, I was part of the family. Yes, I’m twenty years those kids’ senior. I probably don’t listen to their kind of music and I don’t wear their kinds of clothes.
But for a few hours on a rainy Tuesday, I didn’t just get to feel what it was like to be a Cowboy. I got to feel what it was like to be accepted as one.
That’s not bad for a day’s work. Not bad at all.
